CAS Confirms the Eligibility of Ecuador’s Byron Castillo


On 8 November 2022, the Court of Arbitration for Sport announced that it had confirmed that the Ecuadorian player Byron Castillo was eligible to represent the national football team of the Andean country. Notwithstanding this, the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) was sanctioned as it had breached several FIFA provisions.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee announced, on 11 May 2022, that it would open proceedings concerning the complaint filed in early May 2022 by the Football Association of Chile (FAC) about the alleged false Ecuadorian nationality of the player Byron Castillo, who was, in fact, and according to FAC, a Colombian national.
