Chinese Club Withdrawns from AFC Champions League due to Political Reasons


On 19 February 2025, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) determined that Shandong Taishan (Shandong) had withdrawn from the AFC Champions League after the club confirmed it would not participate in their league stage match against Ulsan Hyundai (Ulsan) on that very day. Political reasons seemed to be at the issue’s origin.

On the concluding day of the Asian Champions League group stage, a significant disruption occurred when Chinese club Shandong announced their withdrawal from the match against South Korean side Ulsan, citing physical health issues affecting their players.
