Collective Sale of Football Television Rights in Turkey
Recently, the Turkish Football Federation has completed its tender process and as result of this, Turkey’s pay-TV operator Digiturk, which is now owned by Qatar’s beIN Group, acquired Turkish league football broadcasting rights for a five-year period in a tender on 21 November 2016 making the highest bid at USD 500 million (approx. EUR 460 million).

Introductory Remarks

Sport today is a big business globally that represents more than 3% of world trade, and in Turkey sport accounts for and generates USD 1,5 billion (approx. EUR 1.4 billion) per year.

In line with the economic value of sports, advances in communications technologies have revolutionized broadcast sports coverage and enabled millions of people around the country to take part in the excitement of major sporting events.

In that regard, for most sports organizations, the sale of broadcasting and media rights is now the biggest source of revenue, generating the funds needed to finance major sporting events, refurbish stadiums, and contributes to the development of sport at grassroots level.
