In a report for the 2022-2023 season, FIFPRO presents its analyses of the workload borne by professional male football players. By studying data from over 1,500 national and international players mainly in Europe’s top five leagues, FIFPRO identifies general and individual trends of this workload, increasingly resembling an overload.
Due to its global popularity and the resulting economic and financial interests, professional football has undergone significant structural evolutions over the past 25 years, particularly characterized by an increase in the number of competitions and matches.
The desire of organizers and clubs to enhance the sport’s attractiveness for fans, media and partners leads to a denser sports calendar and new playing modalities, aiming to offer a real sporting show. This inevitably results in an increased workload for professional players who, facing intensified competition and a never-ending influx of aspiring players, are forced to maintain a particularly sustained work pace.
However, medical studies reveal that maintaining such an overload in the long term is unsustainable for a player, with severe impacts on their physical and mental health. Yet, while these players are at the core of professional football, too...
