French Council of State Endorses French FA Prohibition of Religious Clothing during Sport Events

On 28 June 2023, the French Council of State (Conseil d'État) announced that it endorsed the prohibition issued by the French Football Federation (FFF) on the wearing of political or religious symbols during sports events as the said measure aims to ensure the smooth running of football matches (and sporting events) and avoid confrontation.

Under Article 1 of its Statutes, FFF does not allow “the wearing of any sign or clothing ostensibly expressing a political, philosophical, religious or trade-union affiliation”, as well as “any act of proselytizing or propaganda maneuver” [1] at competitions or events it organizes or co-organizes.
