Football is now the most popular sport in Jamaica and with the significant Jamaican diaspora in such cities such as Atlanta, Toronto, New York, Miami and London (including the many Jamaican heritage players in the leagues of England and the United States of America). The interest in Jamaican football players and club football is growing. Therefore, in order to capitalise on this interest, a recent initiative to improve governance was commenced by Jamaican football authorities whereby it professionalised the Jamaica Premier League (which was formed two years ago).
Background
As part of these governance improvements, the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) undertook important structural changes and technical programs beginning in October 2020 and culminating in a significant governance change by early 2022. Firstly, the JFF set up an entity known as Professional Football Jamaica Limited (PFJL), which is the body responsible for improving the marketing, commercial opportunities and governance of the Jamaica Premier League.
Secondly, with the PFJL set up, it partnered with the Jamaica Premier League, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) to deliver a number of training courses to enhance the capacity of the leadership of the various Jamaican clubs and the competency of their executives and...
