KS Skënderbeu Case: Swiss Federal Tribunal Dismisses Revision Application

On 16 March 2020, the Swiss Federal Tribunal (SFT) upheld a CAS award concerning Albanian Club KS Skënderbeu (the club) involvement in a match-fixing scheme.  The club’s application was rejected because it could not prove that CAS vulnerated its procedural rights.

Facts and Procedure

In 2009, the so-called Betting Fraud Detection System (BFDS) - aimed at monitoring and detecting irregular betting patterns covering all UEFA competition matches and the top two divisions and cup competition of UEFA’s member associations - was created by UEFA and sports data company Sportradar. When irregular odds or betting patterns, which are calculated using sophisticated algorithms, appear and do not match with the BFDS’s calculated odds (using bookmakers’ odds), an alert is generated.
