On 29 July 2026, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee announced that it had initiated proceedings against the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and several members of the South American national team for violating various disciplinary provisions. It also initiated an investigation into a charge of unsportsmanlike conduct against Spain national team player Gavi.
Following the tense 2026 World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, which Spain won over Argentina with a goal by Ferran Torres in the 106th minute, FIFA announced that it is reviewing the case, leveling strong criticism against Argentina for several serious violations during the final and semifinals, as well as other games.
