Elections held at the Uruguayan Football Association - Withdrawal and Suspension
On 31 July 2018, the Clubs’ Extraordinary General Assembly was scheduled to take place, where the President of the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) was to be elected.
Three candidates were running for office: the then President of the AUF, and two relevant Uruguayan football stakeholders.
However, a few hours before the Assembly, the AUF President withdrew his candidacy and also resigned from his office as AUF President for personal reasons. Nevertheless, it was discovered that a few days before resigning, a sports journalist and one of the other candidates released recordings of him that supposedly compromised him and his candidacy. Therefore, these recordings had a crucial effect on his resignation.
