PSG v. Mbappé - The Binding Force of the Fixed-Term Contract and the Limits of Informal Renegotiation

In a judgment of 16 December 2025, the Conseil de prud’hommes de Paris ordered Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to pay over EUR 60 million in outstanding remuneration to Kylian Mbappé. The Court held that, absent a signed amendment, the club could not rely on an alleged oral agreement to suspend payment of contractually agreed sums.

Contractual Framework and Dispute

By amendment dated 21 May 2022, Kylian Mbappé extended his fixed-term employment contract with Paris Saint-Germain until 30 June 2024, with an option exercisable before 31 July 2023 for an additional season.

The contract provided for:

  • a signing bonus of EUR 110 million payable in three instalments;

  • a loyalty bonus of EUR 60...
