Sexual Harassment in Japanese Football

Previous
Next
Sexual harassment in Japanese football seems to be an important and increasingly reported problem. Nan Sato gives her analysis of what she thinks needs to be done to improve the situation.

“It was to show my appreciation for her hard work.” This was the reason given by Mr Naoki Kusunose, Head Coach of the Japanese women’s U-17 national team, when he was accused for hugging a female employee outside of a meeting room during business hours in 2018. The same employee accused him for improper touching just a few months prior to that.[1] When pressed by reporters to provide more details on whether there was indeed sexual harassment, the JFA’s answer was that after engaging attorneys to speak with both Mr Kusunose and the accuser, it could not determine whether the conduct constituted sexual harassment and that Mr Kusunose voluntarily resigned.
