State Aid to Spanish Clubs: The Court of Justice sets aside the judgment of the General Court!

On 4 March 2021, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) issued a ruling concerning alleged state aid provided to four Spanish clubs that contravened European Union (EU) Law principles.

It should be noted that the Spanish Sports Act of 1990 (Ley 10/1990, de 15 de octubre) forced all Spanish professional sports clubs to convert into public limited sports companies (Sociedades Anónimas Deportivas or SAD), except for four professional sports clubs, which were allowed to retain their status as non-commercial sports associations. These four clubs, FC Barcelona (Barcelona), Club Atlético Osasuna (Osasuna), Athletic Club (ACB) and Real Madrid...
