Termination of Coach Contracts due to Bad Sporting Results and the Legal Consequences before Japanese National Courts

Background

The Japan Professional Football League (J-League) was founded in 1993, marking its 27th anniversary this year (2019). The J-League consists of 55 clubs (18 clubs in Division 1, 22 clubs in Division 2 and 15 clubs in Division 3). In the J-League, since its establishment, foreign nationals who do not have Japanese nationality have also served as football coaches. At the beginning of the 2019 season, 14 foreign nationals serve as coaches among 55 clubs.

In recent years, some J-League clubs that have suffered from bad sporting results have terminated their contracts with coaches during the season. In the past five seasons, the numbers of clubs which have terminated these contracts are shown in the table below. On average, 12 clubs (21%) per year have terminated their contracts with their coaches during the season.
