In light of recent changes to FIFA’s eligibility rules, and the resultant conversations around the issue of nationality in sport, the author examines the Home Nations Agreement, the gentleman’s agreement concerning the unique situation of the four FIFA member associations within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK).[1]
The Scottish Football Association (SFA), Football Association of Wales, Irish Football Association and English Football Association (individually referred to as a “Home Nation” and collectively referred to as the “Home Nations”) each select players of British nationality, due to the provisions of nationality law within the UK. In order to regulate this, over and above the FIFA framework for international selection, the Home Nations have entered into a gentleman’s agreement (the “Home Nations Agreement”), putting in place additional criteria which must be met, as well as establishing selection rules for players who have no “blood connection” to one of the Home Nations.
