Over the last couple of years, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) has faced and successfully defended numerous lawsuits seeking to try and “change the game for the better.” However, on 10 October 2017, when the Men’s National Soccer Team lost 2-1 against Trinidad and Tobago and were officially eliminated from participating in the 2018 World Cup, the USSF’s momentum came to a screeching halt. The entire USSF structure and governance became vulnerable and was the target for change. With the incumbent president of the USSF, Sunil Gulati, announcing he would not run for re-election as president on 4 December 2017, an opportunity arose to bring a new vision to the USSF and address the current problems with soccer in the United States. Eight candidates, half former professional soccer players and the other four with more business-oriented backgrounds, sought to revamp the “broken system”.
