Why the Wirtz Transfer Could Change the Solidarity Contribution System - And Why It Might Not

The late June 2025 transfer of Florian Wirtz to Liverpool FC has prompted questions about the interpretation of FIFA’s solidarity contribution rules. In this article, Luc Kaspereit and Henrik Oltersdorf examine whether 1. FC Köln, where Florian Wirtz spent much of his training period, could hypothetically claim a larger share of the contribution - despite the player’s official move from Bayer Leverkusen. They assess the legal plausibility of such an argument and its potential to influence future cases.

Florian Wirtz just completed the arguably biggest move in the football transfer market of this year (so far). With a transfer sum north of EUR 125 million, a closer look at the solidarity contribution system might be worth it - especially for Wirtz’sformer club 1. FC Köln (Köln).
