A-League clubs and Football Federation Australia dispute concerning players to be released for an international tournament outside the FIFA international window

In January 2018, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) held its under-23 Asian Championships which included Australia’s under-23 national football team’s participation. This AFC tournament was scheduled outside a designated FIFA international window therefore this caused a dispute between A-League clubs and the Football Federation Australia (FFA) regarding the release of players. In fact, some A-League clubs criticised this competition as a waste of time given it did not act as the official Asian Olympic Games qualifiers.

Generally, FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (RSTP) govern the release of players to national association teams.
