A-League Expansion is coming

Previous
Next

The Football Federation Australia (FFA) has formally started its process to expand the A-League by two new A-League Clubs from the 2019-2020 season.

Currently, there are only ten clubs participating in the A-League and there is significant interest from new clubs/franchises to enter the competition. The A-League has similarities with the United Sates based Major League Soccer where a franchise driven model determines new entrants and not relegation and promotion as is common in football worldwide.

The FFA has set up a two-step process, whereby at first instance an invitation for and Expression of Interest (EOI) has been called to receive potential candidate bids. Secondly, the FFA will shortlist candidate bids, who will then be invited to provide a more detailed bidding proposal before a final decision is made. This second phase will be conducted at the conclusion of the EOI stage of the process, where the “FFA intends to issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) to shortlisted parties inviting the submission of detailed binding proposals.”
