Preliminary remarks

After the IFAB in their meeting on 5 March 2016 decided to introduce a 2-year test phase for the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, the German Football League decided to adopt that approach and introduced the VAR system - at the moment only in the Bundesliga with effect from the 2017-2018 season, with the German Football Association (DFB) being likely to follow that approach in the later stages of the German Cup as well.

After 10 rounds that have been played in the meantime, one can draw the following conclusions.

Even if one puts aside the technical problems the system faced at least in the first rounds (that even led to the system completely failed to work in some stadiums, which of course raised the question of equal conditions within the same competition), it seems questionable whether it achieved its purpose pursued by its authors, in particular by the IFAB, which was “minimum interference –...
