The doping case involving the Peruvian striker Paolo Guerrero in the run up to the 2018 World Cup in Russia was very publicised. Thanks to a decision rendered by the Swiss Federal Tribunal just a few days before the start of the competition, the player was finally allowed to participate. What is the position of FIFPro in this regard?
This is an ongoing case and FIFPro is very concerned about how it developed. However, FIFPro is pleased that Paolo Guerrero has been successful in his legal battle to play for Peru in the 2018 World Cup. Guerrero's 14-month sanction for unknowingly ingesting a banned substance is unfair and disproportionate. The support from his colleagues including the captains of Australia, Denmark and France, Peru’s World Cup group rivals, is clear evidence of that.
