In this article, the author will provide an overview of the saga relating to the premature termination of the 2019-2020 football season in the Netherlands, which eventually resulted in court proceedings, followed by an overview of the amendments to the Regulations and their effect on a potential premature termination of future domestic competitions.

The COVID-19 outbreak has had and continues to have a major impact across society worldwide, including sports. After a disruption of several months, most national and international football competitions could complete the 2019-2020 season. However, several domestic leagues were terminated prematurely, such as the French Ligue 1, the Belgian Pro League, and the Dutch Eredivisie and Eerste Divisie (the first and second divisions).

While the 2020-2021 football season is underway in most countries, the much anticipated “second wave” of the coronavirus is hitting the world hard. Consequently, a disruption of the current football season cannot be excluded. The Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) has anticipated such a possible occurrence and decided to amend the Regulations for Professional Football Matches (Regulations)
