On 7 September 2017, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) issued significant sanctions against two players from League of Ireland First Division club, Athlone Town AFC. Mr Igors Labuts, (a Latvian goalkeeper) and Mr Dragos Sfrijan (a Romanian midfielder) were both banned from taking part in any football-related activity for a period of 12 months. 

The decisions were issued after an investigation by the FAI, following the receipt of a report from the UEFA Betting Fraud Detection System. That report described irregular betting patterns associated with the SSE Airtricity National League First Division match on 29 April 2017...
