New Image Rights Regulations in Uruguay

In recent years, Uruguayan football experienced a revolution regarding image rights, due to lawsuits filed by both players and referees.

Introduction

 

In 2017, Uruguay National Team players, together with several local league players, established the so-called “More United Than Never” movement, which started a long-standing postponed claim for their image rights. Eventually, the Uruguayan Association of Referees (AUDAF) conducted in 2018 a series of investigations targeting both the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) and the company holding the television rights of Uruguayan football, Tenfield.

Currently, the AUDAF has filed a lawsuit before the Uruguayan Civil justice against both the AUF and Tenfield, claiming collective image...
