Calendar of Competitions: Players’ Unions Take Legal Action against FIFA

On 13 June 2024, member unions of FIFPRO Europe filed a lawsuit against FIFA, challenging the legality of its decisions to unilaterally set the international match calendar and, in particular, the decision to create and schedule the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

The players' unions believe that these decisions violate the rights that players and their unions derive from the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights (CFREU) and that they also infringe European competition law.

The Professional Footballers' Association of England (PFA) and the Union Nationale des Footballeurs Professionnels (UNFP, the French professional players’ union), with the support of FIFPRO Europe, are asking the Commercial Court of Brussels (Tribunal de l'Entreprise Francophone de Bruxelles) to refer the case to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) with four questions for a preliminary ruling.
